Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, the endometrium, grows in abnormal places in the abdominal cavity. The most common sites for endometriosis to grow are the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, and the lining (the peritoneum) of the pelvis, especially behind the uterus. The cause of endometriosis is unknown although there are several theories. Endometriosis may run in families. Endometriosis can be found in 5% to 15% of women of reproductive age.
