Type 1 Diabetes in Adults

Diabetes is a chronic lifelong condition that occurs when the pancreas stops making insulin. Without insulin, energy from food cannot be used, and it builds up in the bloodstream. This leads to dangerously high levels of blood glucose, or glucose. Type 1 diabetes develops when the body’s natural defense system, the immune system, causes the body to destroy islet cells, the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented. It is not caused by eating too much sugar. Diabetes is a chronic lifelong condition that occurs when the pancreas stops making insulin.
